I’ve joined the steering committee of Sustainable Food Cornwall to help drive a more inclusive, affordable and regenerative food system in Cornwall. Our vision is for everyone in Cornwall to have access to healthy and affordable food, and for that food to be produced in a way that protects the planet, connects our communities and contributes to a fair and thriving economy.
Cornwall’s food system is a complex web of activities involving the production, processing, transport and consumption of food and drink by over half a million residents and five million visitors a year. It involves farmers, community growers, chefs, school children, parents, supermarkets, shops, cafes… Let’s face it… it involves everyone. Because everyone needs food! Food to live, grow and thrive. And in Cornwall, people need food to run their businesses. The agri-food sector is an integral part of the Cornish economy.
With so much complexity and interconnectedness, changing the food system demands a systems approach. This means having a vision and plan to achieve change across a breadth of different but connected food issues. It also means local people and organisations, active at all levels and across all parts of the food system, working together. No single organisation, whether public, private or third sector, holds the powers, remit, or insight to change the local food system alone.
So, the aim of our partnership is to support cross-sector working on food system change, enabling public agencies, community organisations, businesses, and academics to collaborate on priorities and action for Cornwall.

As a first step, we’ve put together a Sustainable Food Charter which outlines the six key principles integral to our aims and values. These are based on the Sustainable Food Places framework.
- Cornwall Food Strategy – creating an overarching vision.
- Good Food Movement – getting everyone involved.
- Healthy Food for One and All – a focus on food as integral to wellbeing.
- Sustainable Food Economy – ensuring the agri-food sector is economically viable.
- Catering & Procurement – creating a localised food system which invests in local producers.
- Food for the Planet – enabling regenerative agri-food systems.
